Legacies & Bequests
AIDS Survival Project fosters self-empowerment, and stating your wishes
through a written will, power-of-attorney or trust are potent expressions
of empowerment that can affect the lives of others for years to come.
There are several types of bequests you can make. The following provides
general information about such requests and does not constitute legal
advice; you should consult an attorney before making any changes or
additions to your will. An excellent resource for exploring the options
below, and many more, is Leave
a Legacy Georgia.
Unrestricted Bequest – a specified gift to ASP
in general, allowing the Board of Directors flexibility in how the funds
may best be used. This bequest can be cash, stock, life insurance, even
real estate.
Residuary Bequest – also unrestricted and flexible, but
specifying that the residual of your estate go to ASP after other bequests
have been honored. You may allocate all or a portion of your estate
in this manner.
Restricted Bequest – specifying the use of funds
for a specific program, such as for THRIVE! Weekend or Survival
News. There is usually an accompanying statement to such a gift
noting that if at any time, in the judgment of the Board of Directors,
it is impossible or impractical to carry out the specified purpose of
your bequest, a purpose for the funds as near as possible to the original
stated purpose may be determined by the Board. Bear in mind that overly
specific restrictions can present burdensome problems and should be
talked over with your attorney and the ASP Board President.
